The Rest of the Year?

I saw a Tweet this week by a respected speaker and motivator that asked “What are your goals for the rest of the year?” This is an interesting contrast to Scrum for Your Life, which continuously asks “What are your goals for the next sprint?” In other words, for the next four weeks. The process is repeated every four weeks so that you are always focused on what you want and always making progress, because the expectation at the end of those four weeks is that you have something you can call DONE. It may be something small, and lots of small pieces put together equals big accomplishments.

My most recent Sprint started this past Sunday, November 8, so I’m looking at what I can accomplish by Sunday, December 6. And on December 6, I’ll start a new Sprint that takes me to January 3. It’s only a coincidence that it starts near the first of the year, because I will not be creating any New Year’s Resolutions. All of my “resolutions” for the future are in my Master Backlog.

If you haven’t started using Scrum for Your Life to achieve your goals yet, why not start today? If you do that, you will already be making progress toward the goals that are most important to you, because they will align with your values, and when the New Year arrives, you can just smile and keep progressing.
