The Secret
Anyone who knows me is aware that I have little tolerance for superstition, supernatural or anything not verifiable by observation and experimentation. You would think that the book The Secret and the movie of the same name would be something I despise, but it’s not. I’ve proven it.
The book and the movie miss an important ingredient in the power of attraction that they talk about. That’s the effort involved in bringing those things to you. One can’t sit crossed-legged on the floor for six months thinking about a Porsche and expect it to just show up in the garage. But everything that has come into your life and mine is through a similar mental process, and the more “obsessed“ you become with your thoughts, the faster things come to you through your efforts.
Consider the person who prays five times a day, or runs three miles every morning. What drives them to do that? It’s what they think about and what they believe! The Muslim believes prayer is good and necessary so he directs his actions toward fulfilling those beliefs. And five times a day reinforces that and strengthens his beliefs. The same is true for the runner. She believes that running will make her fit and healthy (two of her values) so she again reinforces by running every morning.
In a simpler example, how long after you start thinking about ice cream does it take for you to satisfy that desire. (or glass of wine, hamburger, etc.) Not long. Because that desire is short-term and easy to satisfy, but you have to go to the ice cream.
Bigger items take longer. I remember when buying my first house I was obsessed about getting it, and short about $20,000 for the down payment. After thinking intently for weeks, I remembered someone I knew who was getting a small return on a CD and offered to more than double her rate if she’d lend me the money for the down payment. A week later I made an offer on the house and later moved in.
And vision boards! I have dozens of items on my vision boards that have come to pass, not just because I looked at them regularly, but because looking at them regularly align my actions with steps to pursue them. And the effort was not greater than just going through the motions of day to day work without a goal or vision.
I encourage to watch The Secret again with this in mind. Let me know what kinds of things come into your life.
